Alles gut, schönes Auto im guten Zustand. Alles gut organisiert. Einzige Mini Verbesserungsidee könnte eine geringere Wartezeit für das Shuttle sein. Das mussten wir schon 15 min warten.

    How to Drive from Málaga Airport to Granada in a Rental Car

    Málaga Airport to Granada by Car: One of the Easiest Ways to Continue Your Andalusia Trip

    Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is not used only by travellers staying on the coast.

    For many visitors, it is a convenient arrival point before continuing to Granada, especially if the trip also includes other parts of Andalusia, the Alhambra, Sierra Nevada or several cities in the region.

    With a rental car, you can normally drive from Málaga Airport to Granada in around an hour and a half. Most of the route follows good motorways, there are no particularly difficult sections, and the standard route does not require toll roads.

    There is one important detail: getting to Granada is quite easy. Driving into the historic centre can be rather more interesting than you might have hoped.

    Granada has traffic restrictions, camera enforcement, a Low Emission Zone and additional access rules in certain central districts. So the main advice for anyone arriving with a rental car is simple: reaching Granada is easy, but blindly following the GPS all the way to the door of any hotel is not always a brilliant idea.

    In this guide, we explain the route from Málaga Airport to Granada, journey times, the A-45 and A-92, the optional AP-46 toll road, parking, traffic restrictions and how to organise a visit to the Alhambra.

    How Far Is Granada from Málaga Airport?

    The distance from Málaga Airport to Granada is approximately 134 to 135 kilometres, depending on your final destination in the city and the route you choose.

    In normal traffic, the journey usually takes around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes.

    The trip may take longer because of:

    • traffic around Málaga;
    • congestion on the A-45;
    • roadworks;
    • weather conditions;
    • traffic entering Granada;
    • parking;
    • the location of your accommodation.

    If you have a fixed entry time for the Alhambra, do not plan the trip down to the exact minute.

    A 90-minute drive does not mean that exactly 90 minutes after leaving the airport you will already be standing calmly outside the Palacios Nazaríes with your ticket in hand.

    What Is the Main Route from Málaga Airport to Granada?

    The most practical standard route uses:

    • the A-7 after leaving the airport area;
    • the A-45 towards Antequera;
    • the A-92 towards Granada.

    After leaving Málaga, the route gradually moves away from the coast and into inland Andalusia.

    The A-45 takes you north towards Antequera. You then join the A-92 and continue east through the Loja area towards Granada.

    Most of the journey is on motorway and is well signposted.

    Do You Have to Pay Tolls Between Málaga and Granada?

    No. The standard route via the A-45 and A-92 can be driven without using any toll roads.

    This is one of the reasons it is normally the most practical option.

    However, the toll AP-46 runs alongside part of the A-45.

    It can be used as an alternative depending on traffic conditions.

    Is the AP-46 Worth Using?

    Not necessarily.

    The AP-46 runs parallel to part of the standard route and allows drivers to bypass the Las Pedrizas section.

    In some situations it can save a little time, but the actual advantage depends on current traffic.

    The AP-46 may make sense if:

    • the A-45 is heavily congested;
    • you need to arrive at a specific time;
    • your navigation app shows a meaningful time saving;
    • there are roadworks or an incident on the free route.

    If the A-45 is flowing normally, there is usually no reason to search specifically for the toll road.

    The Route via Antequera and Loja

    A typical journey looks like this:

    1. collect your rental car near Málaga Airport;
    2. leave the airport area and head towards the A-45;
    3. continue north on the A-45 towards Antequera;
    4. join the A-92 towards Granada;
    5. continue past the Loja area;
    6. follow signs for Granada;
    7. choose the correct entrance into the city according to your parking garage or hotel.

    The final point is more important than it may appear.

    In Granada, it is not a good idea to simply type the hotel name into the GPS and give the navigation system complete creative freedom inside the historic centre.

    Is There an Alternative Route Along the Coast?

    Yes.

    You can travel east from Málaga on the A-7 along the coast, then head inland from the Motril area towards Granada on the A-44.

    This route is significantly longer and usually takes more time.

    It mainly makes sense if you want to combine the journey with stops along the coast.

    For example:

    • Nerja;
    • Almuñécar;
    • Salobreña;
    • Motril.

    If your goal is simply to travel from Málaga Airport to Granada as efficiently as possible, the A-45 and A-92 route is normally the better choice.

    Can You Stop in Antequera on the Way?

    Yes, if your schedule is flexible.

    Antequera is close to the main route and can be a good stop, especially if Granada is part of a longer Andalusian road trip rather than simply your destination after a flight.

    However, if you already have a timed ticket for the Alhambra, it is better not to turn the journey into an improvised sightseeing tour.

    Alhambra first. Adventures afterwards.

    Is Driving from Málaga to Granada Difficult?

    For a normal driver, the route is straightforward.

    Most of the journey:

    • uses wide roads;
    • is fully paved;
    • follows motorways;
    • has clear navigation;
    • does not require driving on difficult mountain hairpins.

    The landscape becomes more mountainous as you move inland from Málaga.

    For a modern passenger car, however, this is a completely normal route.

    Do You Need an SUV for Málaga Airport to Granada?

    No.

    An SUV is not necessary for a normal trip to Granada.

    A compact or mid-size car will handle the route perfectly well.

    In fact, a smaller vehicle may be more convenient after arrival because of parking garages and narrower streets in Granada.

    An SUV may make sense if:

    • you are travelling with a larger family;
    • you have a lot of luggage;
    • you plan further trips into mountain areas;
    • you simply need more space for the rest of your journey.

    Automatic or Manual for the Drive to Granada?

    Either is suitable.

    The route does not require any special driving skills.

    If you normally drive an automatic, there is little reason to make your holiday more complicated with an unfamiliar manual gearbox just to save a small amount of money.

    Especially after a flight, baggage collection, car pickup and another hour and a half on the road.

    Do You Need to Refuel Before Leaving Málaga?

    If there is enough fuel in the car, no special fuel stop is necessary.

    The distance to Granada is only around 135 kilometres, which is no problem for a normal vehicle.

    Before leaving, simply check:

    • the fuel level;
    • the correct fuel type;
    • the estimated range;
    • the fuel return conditions in your rental agreement.

    If you have just collected the car and the fuel level is normal, you can simply start the journey.

    What Should You Know Before Driving into Granada?

    This is where the most important part of the planning begins.

    Central Granada has several traffic restrictions.

    The city also operates a Low Emission Zone.

    Its historic street layout makes some districts particularly unsuitable for spontaneous driving experiments.

    Be especially careful around:

    • Centro Histórico;
    • Albaicín;
    • Realejo;
    • the areas around Gran Vía;
    • certain approaches to historic streets.

    Why Shouldn’t You Blindly Trust GPS in Central Granada?

    A navigation app may know that a street physically exists without always understanding whether your particular vehicle is currently allowed to use it.

    Granada’s municipal authorities specifically warn drivers not to rely only on GPS when travelling through the centre.

    Access to some streets is monitored by cameras.

    So a route that looks perfect on your phone can also be a surprisingly efficient way to have a traffic violation recorded automatically.

    What If Your Hotel Is in the Historic Centre?

    Contact the hotel before entering Granada.

    If an officially registered accommodation is inside a restricted area and has the necessary authorisation, guests may be allowed to access it using a specific approved route.

    The important thing is to follow the hotel’s exact instructions.

    The property may have a particular authorised approach.

    Ask in advance:

    • whether you can drive directly to the hotel;
    • whether you need to provide the vehicle registration number;
    • which route is authorised;
    • where the parking is located;
    • whether the vehicle can remain there overnight;
    • how you should leave the area afterwards.

    Can You Simply Drive into the Albaicín?

    For a tourist without a specific reason, it is better not to.

    The Albaicín is famous for its narrow streets, complicated historic layout and traffic restrictions.

    It is a wonderful place to explore on foot.

    For a car, the romance is rather more limited.

    It is generally easier to leave the vehicle in a suitable car park and continue on foot or by public transport.

    What About Sacromonte?

    The same general logic applies.

    If you do not have a specific authorised route to a hotel or private address, it is better not to explore the historic neighbourhoods in a rental car.

    Granada is much more enjoyable when you are looking at the Albaicín rather than calculating whether the car will fit between a wall and a parked delivery van.

    Where Is the Best Place to Park in Granada?

    For visitors, it is often easiest to choose a public car park outside the most complicated parts of the historic centre and continue on foot or by bus.

    Granada’s official tourist information, for example, lists several car parks with visitor rates, including:

    • Torres Neptuno;
    • Arabial;
    • Severo Ochoa.

    From these areas, you can continue into the centre on foot or by public transport.

    Should You Park Right in the Centre?

    It depends on the specific car park and the route used to reach it.

    Granada has underground car parks in central locations, but the parking facility itself is not always the difficult part.

    The main issue is reaching it without accidentally entering a restricted street or special lane.

    If it is your first visit to Granada, choosing a car park slightly outside the historic core is often more relaxing.

    An extra ten-minute walk can be much cheaper than one wrong turn.

    Where Should You Park If You Are Mainly Visiting the Alhambra?

    The Alhambra has its own public car park.

    It operates 24 hours a day and has several hundred spaces.

    This is one of the most obvious options if your main purpose after arriving is to visit the Alhambra.

    There is no need to drive into central Granada first and then climb back up towards the complex.

    Can You Leave the Car at the Alhambra and Then Visit the Centre?

    You can organise the day this way, although the best option depends on your later plans.

    The historic centre is lower than the Alhambra, so after your visit you can use public transport or a taxi.

    If you plan to spend the whole day in Granada, it may sometimes be more convenient to move the car later to another garage that is better positioned for exploring the centre.

    But additional driving is not always necessary.

    Should You Buy Alhambra Tickets in Advance?

    Yes. If visiting the Alhambra is an important part of your trip, buying tickets in advance is strongly recommended.

    Demand is high, and entry to the Palacios Nazaríes is tied to the specific time shown on your ticket.

    Arriving late may mean losing access to this part of the complex.

    When travelling directly from Málaga Airport, remember to allow time for:

    • collecting the rental car;
    • driving to Granada;
    • possible traffic;
    • parking;
    • walking from the car to the entrance;
    • a reasonable buffer before your ticket time.

    Should You Go Straight to the Alhambra After Your Flight?

    You can, but only if there is plenty of time between landing and your entry slot.

    After the plane arrives, you still need to:

    • leave the aircraft;
    • collect your luggage;
    • pick up the rental car;
    • check the vehicle;
    • leave the airport area;
    • drive approximately 135 kilometres;
    • park;
    • walk to the entrance.

    The flight may be delayed, luggage may travel around the carousel with impressive philosophical calm, and traffic has absolutely no interest in the time printed on your ticket.

    So avoid an overly tight schedule.

    Is Málaga Airport to Granada a Good Winter Drive?

    Yes. The route is used all year round.

    However, Granada’s climate is noticeably different from the coast around Málaga.

    During winter, Granada can be considerably colder.

    If you are continuing into Sierra Nevada, check weather and mountain road conditions separately.

    Is There Snow on the Málaga to Granada Route?

    The standard A-45 and A-92 route to Granada is not the same as driving to a ski resort.

    However, winter conditions can change in inland Andalusia.

    If you continue towards Sierra Nevada, the situation is different, and conditions on the A-395 and any winter driving requirements should be checked separately.

    Can You Combine Granada with Sierra Nevada?

    Yes, especially if you are staying in the area for several days.

    From Granada to the Pradollano area, the drive usually takes around 45 minutes in normal conditions.

    In winter, however, this is a mountain road where weather becomes much more important.

    If Sierra Nevada is one of the main purposes of your trip, choose the car and plan the route with the season in mind.

    Is the Route Suitable for Families with Children?

    Yes.

    Most of the journey is on motorway, which usually makes it easier with children than a long drive on mountain roads.

    You can stop along the way if necessary.

    For a family trip, it is useful to decide in advance:

    • whether you need a child seat;
    • whether there is enough space for luggage;
    • where you will park in Granada;
    • whether your schedule after the flight is too tight.

    Is Loja Worth a Stop?

    If you are travelling without a strict schedule, you can stop there.

    Loja is directly on the A-92 between Antequera and Granada.

    For a normal transfer from the airport, however, an additional stop is usually unnecessary.

    Can You Visit Granada as a Day Trip from Málaga?

    Yes.

    Granada is close enough for a full day trip.

    If you leave early, you can spend most of the day in the city and return to the Costa del Sol in the evening.

    For a first visit, however, staying one night in Granada makes the trip considerably less rushed, especially if you want to see the Alhambra and explore the historic centre properly.

    Example Málaga to Granada Day Trip

    07:30-08:00 - Leave Málaga

    An early start gives you a useful time buffer.

    09:30 - Arrive in Granada

    Park either near the Alhambra or in a pre-selected city car park.

    Morning - Alhambra

    Visit the complex according to your reserved entry time for the Palacios Nazaríes.

    After Lunch - Historic Centre

    You can explore the Cathedral area, Plaza Nueva and central streets.

    Late Afternoon - Albaicín

    Leave the rental car parked and continue on foot or by public transport.

    Evening - Return to Málaga

    Check traffic on the A-92 and A-45 before setting off.

    What Else Can You See in Granada Besides the Alhambra?

    Without trying to see the entire city in one day, you can include:

    • Catedral de Granada;
    • Capilla Real;
    • Albaicín;
    • Mirador de San Nicolás;
    • Plaza Nueva;
    • Carrera del Darro;
    • Sacromonte;
    • the central streets around Gran Vía.

    The important thing is not to try to drive between every attraction.

    A car is very useful for getting to Granada. In the historic centre itself, your feet are often considerably more effective.

    Do You Need a Car If You Stay in Granada for Several Days?

    If your plans are limited to the historic centre and the Alhambra, the vehicle may remain parked most of the time.

    But it becomes very useful if you plan to visit:

    • Sierra Nevada;
    • the Alpujarra;
    • smaller towns in Granada province;
    • the coast;
    • other destinations in Andalusia.

    How Should You Choose a Hotel in Granada When Travelling by Car?

    Do not look only at the hotel’s location. Check the parking situation as well.

    It is useful to confirm:

    • whether the hotel has private parking;
    • how much it costs;
    • whether a space must be reserved;
    • whether the hotel is inside a restricted traffic zone;
    • whether authorised access is available;
    • whether you need to provide the car registration number in advance.

    A hotel on a beautiful historic street may look perfect in photographs, but for someone arriving by car the really interesting part sometimes begins with the words: “Unfortunately, we do not have parking.”

    What If the Hotel Asks for Your Registration Number?

    Provide the vehicle details according to the hotel’s instructions.

    In some cases, this is necessary to register access to a restricted area.

    Do not assume the registration number has been entered correctly simply because you mentioned it in a booking comment.

    It is better to receive confirmation.

    What Should You Do If the GPS Sends You Past a No-Entry Sign?

    Follow the road signs.

    Not the GPS.

    This is especially important in Granada.

    If your navigation app suggests turning into a restricted street, bus lane or prohibited section, continue on a legal route and let the app recalculate.

    Are There Traffic Cameras in Central Granada?

    Yes. Access restrictions are enforced partly through cameras.

    This is why it is better to understand your parking and authorised route in advance than to hope nobody notices a wrong turn.

    A camera usually has remarkably little sympathy for the explanation: “Google Maps told us to go that way.”

    What Is Granada’s Low Emission Zone?

    The Low Emission Zone is known locally as the Zona de Bajas Emisiones, or ZBE.

    It operates in Granada alongside other traffic restrictions in central districts.

    A vehicle meeting environmental requirements does not automatically have permission to enter every restricted street in the historic centre.

    These are different rules that can apply at the same time.

    Do You Need to Register Anything Yourself for a Rental Car?

    For a normal rental, you do not need to attach your own environmental stickers or modify the vehicle documents.

    However, the driver is still responsible for following road signs, access restrictions and instructions provided by the hotel or car park.

    How Much Fuel Will You Need for Málaga - Granada - Málaga?

    The return journey is roughly 270 kilometres, excluding additional driving inside Granada.

    Actual fuel consumption depends on the car, engine, speed and traffic.

    You do not need any unusual fuel reserve, but it is sensible to check the fuel level before leaving Granada.

    Where Should You Refuel Before Returning to Málaga?

    You can refuel either in Granada or along the route.

    If the vehicle must be returned with a specific fuel level, follow the conditions in your rental agreement.

    If a full tank is required, it is usually more practical to make the final fuel stop closer to Málaga Airport so that you do not drive a significant distance afterwards.

    How Much Time Should You Allow for the Return to Málaga Airport?

    If you are driving directly to catch a flight, do not use the normal 90-minute driving time as your only calculation.

    Also allow time for:

    • traffic;
    • refuelling;
    • returning the rental car;
    • vehicle inspection;
    • handing over the keys;
    • getting to the terminal;
    • check-in and airport security.

    Granada is wonderful. Missing your flight rarely improves the experience.

    What Should You Do If You Are Delayed on the Road?

    If traffic stops because of an accident, roadworks or another incident, follow current navigation information and official road signs.

    If you have a scheduled vehicle return time and it becomes clear that you will be late, contact the rental company in advance.

    A late return does not automatically become a rental extension.

    What Should You Do If the Car Has a Technical Problem?

    If a dashboard warning appears, you suffer a puncture or another technical problem develops, stop in a safe place and contact SOLO rent a car.

    Do not arrange repairs independently without approval.

    Common Mistakes on the Málaga Airport to Granada Route

    • booking the Alhambra too soon after flight arrival;
    • not buying tickets in advance;
    • blindly following GPS in central Granada;
    • driving into the Albaicín unnecessarily;
    • not checking hotel parking;
    • failing to ask for the authorised route to accommodation inside a restricted area;
    • assuming the Low Emission Zone and historic-centre access restrictions are the same thing;
    • trying to park directly beside every attraction;
    • not allowing enough time before the return flight;
    • choosing an unnecessarily large car.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Driving from Málaga Airport to Granada

    How far is Granada from Málaga Airport?

    Approximately 134 to 135 kilometres, depending on your route and final destination.

    How long does the journey take?

    In normal traffic, usually around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes.

    What is the easiest route?

    The standard route follows the A-45 towards Antequera and then the A-92 through the Loja area to Granada.

    Do you have to pay tolls?

    No. The main A-45 and A-92 route is toll-free. The AP-46 is an optional toll alternative for part of the journey.

    Do you need an SUV?

    No. A compact or mid-size car is perfectly suitable for a normal trip to Granada.

    Can you drive into central Granada?

    Several central areas have traffic restrictions. Pay close attention to signs and confirm the authorised route to your hotel or car park in advance.

    Can you drive into the Albaicín?

    For a normal tourist visit, it is better to avoid doing so unless your hotel or destination has provided specific instructions for authorised access.

    Where can you park for the Alhambra?

    The Alhambra has its own public car park, which operates 24 hours a day.

    Should you buy Alhambra tickets in advance?

    Yes, this is strongly recommended. Entry to the Palacios Nazaríes is tied to a specific time shown on your ticket.

    Can you visit Granada as a day trip from Málaga?

    Málaga Airport to Granada with SOLO rent a car

    A rental car is one of the most convenient ways to travel from Málaga Airport to Granada, particularly if Granada is not the only stop on your Andalusia itinerary.

    The standard route via the A-45 and A-92 is around 135 kilometres and normally takes roughly an hour and a half in normal traffic.

    The usual route does not require toll roads, although the AP-46 can be used as an alternative depending on current traffic.

    The part of the journey that requires the most attention is not the motorway drive but the final few kilometres after arriving in Granada.

    The historic centre has traffic restrictions, so choose a suitable car park in advance or ask your hotel for the authorised access route.

    Do not try to explore the Albaicín or central historic streets by car simply because your navigation app has drawn a nice blue line through them.

    For the Alhambra, you can use the complex’s own public car park. For exploring the city centre, it is usually easier to leave the car in a suitable parking facility and continue on foot or by public transport.

    If your journey continues through Andalusia, the rental car becomes especially useful again after Granada, giving you much easier access to Sierra Nevada, the Alpujarra, the coast and other destinations in the region.

    In Short

    Málaga Airport is approximately 134 to 135 kilometres from Granada. The standard route via the A-45 and A-92 normally takes around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes in normal traffic.

    The main route is toll-free. The AP-46 can be used as a paid alternative for part of the journey when current traffic conditions make it worthwhile.

    You do not need an SUV for the normal drive. A compact or mid-size car may actually be more convenient once you reach Granada.

    The main challenge begins after arrival: Granada’s historic centre has traffic restrictions and camera enforcement. Do not blindly follow GPS. If your hotel is within a restricted area, ask for the authorised access route before driving in.

    The Alhambra has its own public car park. Tickets for the Palacios Nazaríes should be booked in advance because entry is tied to the specific time printed on the ticket.

    If Granada is part of a wider Andalusia road trip, renting a car at Málaga Airport not only makes the journey to the city easy but also gives you convenient access to Sierra Nevada, the Alpujarra and other parts of the region.
