    How to Drive from Alicante Airport to Dénia in a Rental Car

    Alicante Airport to Dénia by Car: An Easy Route to the Northern Costa Blanca

    Dénia is located in the north of Alicante province, around 100 kilometres from Alicante-Elche Airport.

    By car, the journey normally takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, although in summer and during busy traffic periods it is better to allow up to 1 hour 30 minutes.

    Most of the route follows the A-70 and AP-7, so the journey is relatively straightforward even if it is your first time driving in Spain.

    A rental car becomes particularly useful after arrival. Central Dénia is fairly compact, but the beaches of Les Marines stretch far to the north, Les Rotes lies to the south, and places such as Montgó, neighbouring Jávea and other destinations in Marina Alta are much easier to explore by car.

    In this guide, we explain the route from Alicante Airport to Dénia, parking options, the main areas of the town, beaches and several practical details worth knowing before you travel.

    How Far Is Dénia from Alicante Airport?

    The distance is approximately 100 kilometres.

    In normal traffic, the journey takes a little over an hour.

    In practice, it is sensible to allow around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, especially during the summer season.

    Travel time may increase because of:

    • traffic around Alicante;
    • heavier summer traffic on the AP-7;
    • traffic around Ondara;
    • congestion when entering Dénia;
    • the exact location of your hotel or apartment.

    What Is the Best Route from Alicante Airport to Dénia?

    The standard route is approximately as follows:

    1. leave the airport via the N-338;
    2. join the A-70 towards Alicante / Benidorm / Valencia;
    3. continue north on the AP-7;
    4. take exit 608 Ondara / Dénia / Xàbia;
    5. continue on the CV-725 towards Dénia;
    6. follow navigation to the exact address of your accommodation.

    The route is simple and runs almost entirely on major roads.

    After leaving the AP-7, only a relatively short section on a normal regional road remains before reaching Dénia.

    Do You Have to Pay a Toll on the AP-7 to Dénia?

    No.

    The AP-7 section between Alicante and Dénia is free.

    This part of the motorway was genuinely a toll road until 2020, which is why older websites and forum posts may still warn about charges.

    In 2026, there is no toll to pay for a normal journey from Alicante Airport to Dénia using this section of the AP-7.

    Can You Drive via the N-332 Instead?

    Yes.

    The N-332 runs along the Costa Blanca and can also be used to reach Dénia.

    However, for a direct journey after a flight, it is usually slower.

    The N-332 has more:

    • urban traffic;
    • roundabouts;
    • local speed restrictions;
    • traffic through tourist towns;
    • summer delays.

    If you simply want to reach your hotel as efficiently as possible, the AP-7 is the more practical option.

    Is the Drive from Alicante Airport to Dénia Difficult?

    No.

    The route is suitable even for drivers who have never driven on the Costa Blanca before.

    There are no demanding mountain hairpins on the main route, and most of the journey takes place on motorways and major roads.

    It is enough to set up navigation before leaving and avoid trying to solve the route, air conditioning, Bluetooth and every major life decision from the past decade simultaneously after a flight.

    What Type of Car Is Best for Dénia?

    Most travellers do not need any special type of vehicle.

    A compact car works well for:

    • couples;
    • small families;
    • driving around the centre;
    • parking;
    • trips to the beach.

    If several people are travelling with plenty of luggage, a mid-size car, estate or SUV may be more convenient.

    However, the route to Dénia itself does not require extra ground clearance or four-wheel drive.

    You can read more about vehicle categories in our guide “Rent a Car Alicante: Which Car Should You Choose?”.

    What Should You Check After Picking Up the Car?

    Before leaving Alicante Airport, check:

    • the fuel level;
    • the correct fuel type;
    • the remaining driving range;
    • the exact accommodation address;
    • the route in your navigation app;
    • mirrors and driving position;
    • your phone connection.

    If this is your first time collecting a rental car here, our guide may help: “Car Rental at Alicante Airport: How to Pick Up Your Car After Arrival”.

    Where Should You Go After Arriving in Dénia?

    This depends mainly on where your accommodation is located.

    For visitors, Dénia can roughly be divided into several areas:

    • the centre and historic quarter;
    • the port;
    • Les Marines;
    • Les Rotes;
    • residential areas closer to Montgó.

    If you are staying in an apartment, enter the exact address into your navigation system rather than simply typing “Dénia”.

    Where Is the Historic Centre of Dénia?

    The centre is located around Dénia Castle, the old streets and the main shopping areas.

    This is a good place to leave the car and continue exploring on foot.

    In and around the centre you will find:

    • Dénia Castle;
    • the Les Roques neighbourhood;
    • Calle Loreto;
    • the market;
    • shops;
    • restaurants;
    • Marqués de Campo and the port area.

    Can You Drive Directly to Dénia Castle?

    The castle sits on elevated ground in the centre of town, but a tourist visit is better planned on foot.

    Leave the car at one of the parking areas around the centre and walk up to the entrance.

    Trying to drive as close as possible to a medieval fortress generally saves less time than you then spend looking for somewhere to park.

    Where Can You Park in Dénia?

    Dénia has both paid parking zones and several free municipal car parks.

    Official Dénia tourist information lists free parking areas including:

    • Camí de Sant Joan;
    • Club Náutico - Marina de Dénia;
    • Torrequemada;
    • Avda. Montgó;
    • Avda. Valencia;
    • Parking Las Rotas;
    • several additional areas around the centre.

    The centre also has regulated blue-zone parking, known as zona azul.

    Always check the current conditions and operating hours directly on signs and parking meters.

    Do You Need to Find a New Parking Space for Every Attraction?

    No.

    Central Dénia is well suited to exploring on foot.

    It is more practical to park once and then walk to:

    • the castle;
    • the Old Town;
    • the port;
    • Marqués de Campo;
    • the market;
    • the restaurant streets.

    Moving the car again for a journey of just a few blocks is usually unnecessary.

    What Is Les Marines?

    Les Marines is a long coastal area stretching north from central Dénia.

    Here you will find sandy beaches, apartments, villas, restaurants and numerous residential developments.

    If your priority is a classic beach holiday, many visitors choose to stay in this area.

    The further your accommodation is from the centre, the more useful a rental car becomes.

    What Is Les Rotes?

    Les Rotes lies on the opposite side of town, south of the centre.

    The landscape here is completely different.

    Instead of long sandy beaches, you will mainly find:

    • rocky coastline;
    • small coves;
    • clear water;
    • snorkelling areas;
    • views towards Cabo de San Antonio.

    It is one of the most attractive coastal areas of Dénia.

    Can You Drive to Les Rotes in Summer?

    Seasonal access restrictions need to be considered.

    For example, in 2026 vehicle access to the final section of Les Rotes was restricted from 13 June to 13 September between 08:00 and 20:00.

    A free parking area with space for around 140 vehicles was available for visitors, with a free tourist train connecting it to the final section of the route.

    Rules may change from one season to another, so always check the current arrangements before visiting in summer.

    Which Is Better: Les Marines or Les Rotes?

    If you prefer long sandy beaches and straightforward beach infrastructure, Les Marines is usually more convenient.

    If you prefer rocky coastline, small coves, clear water and coastal walks, Les Rotes is more interesting.

    With a rental car, you do not necessarily need to choose just one.

    You can stay in one part of Dénia and easily visit the other.

    Is Montgó Worth Visiting?

    Yes, especially if you enjoy nature and walking.

    Montgó Natural Park lies between Dénia and Jávea and is one of the main natural attractions in Marina Alta.

    The natural park information centre is located in Dénia.

    For more demanding hiking routes, choose the route in advance and consider the weather, season and your fitness level.

    Having a rental car unfortunately does not turn the mountain into a drive-through attraction. Your legs still have some work to do.

    Is It Worth Driving from Dénia to Jávea?

    Yes.

    Jávea is very close, on the other side of Montgó.

    You can visit for a few hours or spend the entire day there.

    Highlights include Playa del Arenal, the port, Cabo de la Nao and numerous small coves.

    You can read more in our guide “Alicante Airport to Jávea by Rental Car”.

    Where Else Can You Drive from Dénia?

    With a rental car, it is easy to visit:

    • Jávea;
    • Moraira;
    • Benissa;
    • Calpe;
    • Oliva;
    • Gandia;
    • inland areas of Marina Alta.

    Dénia is located far enough north on the Costa Blanca to make it a convenient base for exploring both Alicante province and the southern part of Valencia province.

    What Should You Know About Dénia Port?

    Dénia is an important passenger port.

    Ferries operate from here to Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca.

    As a result, the port can be busy with both passengers and vehicles, especially during the holiday season.

    Can You Take a SOLO Rental Car on a Ferry?

    No.

    The standard permitted territory for SOLO rent a car vehicles includes mainland Spain and Gibraltar.

    The rental car may not be transported by ferry to the Balearic Islands.

    Even if the ferry operator technically allows passengers to book a ticket with a vehicle, that does not mean the rental agreement permits that specific rental car to be transported.

    If you are travelling to Ibiza, Mallorca or Formentera, the SOLO vehicle must remain on the mainland.

    Which Area of Dénia Is Best for Staying with a Car?

    If you mainly want to walk around the centre and visit restaurants, accommodation near the historic centre or port is convenient.

    If the beach is your priority, Les Marines is worth considering.

    If you prefer quieter, rockier coastline, Les Rotes may be more appealing.

    For villas and accommodation closer to Montgó, having a car is practically essential.

    What Should You Check When Booking Accommodation?

    If you are travelling in summer, pay particular attention to parking.

    Check:

    • whether there is a private parking space;
    • whether it is included in the price;
    • whether it is located close to the accommodation;
    • whether it is suitable for a larger vehicle;
    • whether the garage has a height restriction.

    This is especially important for accommodation in the centre and in popular coastal areas.

    What Is Traffic Like in Dénia During Summer?

    Traffic increases noticeably in July and August.

    Busier areas may include:

    • the main entrances to town;
    • roads along Les Marines;
    • the port area;
    • the centre in the evening;
    • roads leading to the beaches.

    As a result, even short journeys around town can take longer than your navigation app initially promises.

    What Should You Do If the Car Develops a Technical Problem?

    If a dashboard warning appears, you hear an unusual noise or another technical issue develops, stop in a safe place and contact SOLO rent a car.

    Do not arrange repairs yourself without prior approval.

    What Should You Do in Case of a Puncture?

    If a tyre is damaged, do not continue driving if this could cause additional damage.

    Find a safe place to stop and contact the rental company.

    The next steps depend on the specific situation and the conditions of your rental agreement.

    How Do You Drive Back from Dénia to Alicante Airport?

    The return route is essentially the same in reverse:

    1. leave Dénia via the CV-725;
    2. join the AP-7 towards Alicante;
    3. continue south;
    4. follow the A-70 towards the airport;
    5. follow signs for Aeropuerto / Alicante-Elche Airport.

    Check current traffic conditions before leaving.

    How Much Time Should You Allow for the Return Journey?

    Do not rely only on the minimum travel time shown by your navigation app.

    Add extra time for:

    • road traffic;
    • summer congestion;
    • refuelling;
    • returning the rental car;
    • getting to the terminal;
    • check-in;
    • security control.

    During the high season, arriving a little early is generally preferable to experimentally discovering how fast you can cross an airport.

    Where Should You Refuel Before Returning the Car?

    Follow the fuel conditions stated in your individual rental agreement.

    If the vehicle needs to be returned with a particular fuel level, it is usually better to plan the final refuelling stop closer to Alicante Airport.

    Dénia is around 100 kilometres from the airport, so filling the tank completely before leaving Dénia may not leave the required level by the time you return the vehicle.

    Common Mistakes on the Alicante Airport - Dénia Route

    • using outdated information saying the AP-7 is a toll road;
    • taking the slower N-332 immediately after a flight simply because it looks more scenic;
    • failing to check parking at the accommodation;
    • trying to drive around central Dénia instead of parking once and walking;
    • not checking seasonal access restrictions in Les Rotes;
    • assuming Les Marines and Les Rotes are in the same area;
    • trying to take a SOLO rental car onto a ferry to the Balearic Islands;
    • leaving too little time for the return journey to Alicante Airport.
