What is included in the car rental price in Spain?
The price of renting a car in Spain may look very simple at first: choose dates, see the amount, book the car. In reality, the final cost depends not only on the number of days and the vehicle category. Deposit, insurance, mileage, fuel, extra services, return time, return location and the conditions of the specific agreement all matter.
This is exactly why two seemingly similar bookings may cost different amounts. One customer rents a compact car for three days in low season and returns it to the same office. Another customer chooses an automatic car, adds extended coverage, a child seat, an additional driver and wants to return the car in another city. Surprisingly, the final price will be different. The world has still not become simple, although humans clearly keep hoping.
In this article, we explain what is usually included in the car rental price in Spain, what may cost extra and what you should check before booking a rental car in Malaga, Malaga Airport, Marbella and Alicante.
Why can the price on the website differ from the final amount?
The price a customer sees on a website or booking platform usually reflects the basic conditions of the selected rental. However, the final amount may change if the customer adds extra services, changes the coverage package, chooses another return office, extends the rental or breaches the rental conditions.
The final price may be affected by:
- rental dates;
- season and demand;
- vehicle category;
- transmission type;
- rental duration;
- pick-up and return location;
- insurance or coverage package;
- deposit conditions;
- included mileage;
- additional drivers;
- child seats and equipment;
- driver age;
- fuel policy;
- late return or rental extension;
- fines, damage and administrative fees.
The main rule is simple: the rental price and the full financial risk under the agreement are not the same thing. The rental price shows how much it costs to use the vehicle under the selected conditions. But if extra services, violations, damage, fines or route changes appear, the total amount may increase. Humanity once again meets conditions that should be read before payment, not after the surprise.
Basic rental price
The basic rental price is the cost of using the vehicle during the selected period. It usually depends on the vehicle category, dates, demand, season, rental duration and pick-up office.
The basic price may usually include:
- use of the vehicle for the agreed period;
- selected vehicle category;
- standard rental conditions;
- basic coverage package, if included in the agreement;
- vehicle preparation before pick-up;
- company support for rental-related questions;
- return of the vehicle to the agreed office;
- mileage conditions stated in the booking.
It is important to understand that the basic price does not mean “absolutely everything is included”. This is not a magical all-inclusive bracelet that lets you lose the key, return the car with an empty tank, arrive a day late and say “but I paid for the rental”. No. The agreement, like a cold mechanical beast, has separate clauses.
Deposit: is it included in the price?
The deposit is usually not included in the rental price. It is a separate amount used as a guarantee during the rental period. It may be blocked or charged depending on the rental duration, card type, package, vehicle category and company conditions.
At SOLO rent a car, the deposit usually works like this:
- for rentals up to and including 12 days, the deposit is usually blocked on a credit card as a pre-authorisation;
- for rentals of 13 days or more, the deposit may be charged instead of only blocked;
- when using a debit card, if accepted under the package and category conditions, the deposit is usually charged;
- the deposit is not accepted in cash;
- the deposit is not accepted by bank transfer;
- the deposit is not accepted by payment link;
- the deposit must be provided with a physical card in the main driver’s name;
- virtual cards and third-party cards are usually not suitable for the deposit.
The deposit is not an additional rental price if the vehicle is returned according to the agreement. However, it may be used to cover costs if there is damage, missing fuel, fines, excess mileage, late return, lost key or other charges.
This is where confusion often begins. The customer sees the rental price and thinks this is the only amount that will ever touch their card. The card, meanwhile, already senses the approaching deposit and quietly prepares for drama.
Insurance and coverage packages
The insurance or coverage package can strongly affect the final rental cost. Basic conditions may include standard coverage, but many customers choose extended packages to reduce financial responsibility in case of damage or to receive more convenient conditions.
Coverage packages may differ by:
- amount of customer liability;
- deposit conditions;
- card type required for the rental;
- covered risks;
- exclusions;
- daily price;
- availability for different vehicle categories;
- document requirements.
It is important to remember that even an extended coverage package does not mean the customer is no longer responsible for anything. Fines, fuel, lost keys, personal belongings, breach of contract, negligent use of the vehicle, driving outside the permitted territory, driving by an unauthorised driver and other exclusions are usually not covered or may not be covered.
Insurance reduces risks, but it does not cancel physics, the agreement or the consequences of strange decisions. If you hit a kerb, lose the key and drive to a country where you are not allowed to go, the coverage package does not turn into a magic wand. Sadly, magic is once again not included in the rate.
Fuel policy
The fuel policy is another point that can affect the final cost. In Spain, the full-to-full format is often used: the customer receives the vehicle with a full tank and must return it with a full tank. However, the specific conditions should always be checked in the agreement.
Before the rental starts, check:
- what fuel level the vehicle is provided with;
- what fuel level it must be returned with;
- which fuel type the vehicle uses;
- what happens if the vehicle is not returned fully refuelled;
- whether there is a refuelling service fee;
- whether you should keep the fuel receipt;
- where it is best to refuel before return;
- how the fuel level is checked at return.
If the vehicle must be returned with a full tank, it is better to refuel in advance rather than search for a petrol station five minutes before return. Especially at Malaga Airport, in Alicante or near an office in high season, when even a simple fuel stop can suddenly become a test of emotional stability.
If the tank is not returned according to the agreement, the customer may have to pay for the missing fuel and an additional refuelling service fee. And no, the phrase “it is almost full” is usually not a precise unit of measurement.
Mileage: included or limited?
Mileage conditions should be checked before booking. In some cases, mileage may be unlimited. In others, it may be limited by day or by the whole rental period.
Mileage is especially important if you are planning:
- a route through Andalusia;
- a trip from Malaga to Granada, Cordoba or Seville;
- a Costa del Sol - Costa Blanca route;
- a trip from Malaga to Alicante;
- a long-term rental;
- returning the vehicle to another office;
- many drives during the holiday;
- routes across mainland Spain.
If included mileage is limited, excess mileage is charged separately according to the rate stated in the rental conditions. That is why before a long route it is better to estimate the kilometres instead of hoping the odometer will also get tired and stop counting. It will not. Very unpleasant machine honesty.
Additional drivers
If someone other than the main driver will drive the vehicle, additional drivers must be added to the agreement. This may be a paid service, and it must be arranged before another person gets behind the wheel.
An additional driver must meet the rental conditions:
- hold a valid driving licence;
- provide the required documents;
- meet age requirements;
- be included in the agreement;
- be confirmed by the rental company;
- not drive the vehicle before being added.
If the car is driven by someone who is not listed in the agreement, this may affect coverage, customer responsibility and possible costs in case of an incident. “He only drove a little” may work as casual conversation, but rental agreements rarely feel tender about it.
Child seats and extra equipment
Child seats, boosters, GPS devices and other extra equipment are usually charged separately unless they are included in special booking conditions. It is better to request them in advance, especially in high season.
Extra equipment may include:
- child seat;
- booster seat;
- baby seat;
- GPS device, if available;
- additional accessories on request;
- other services available at the specific office.
If you are travelling with children, do not leave the child seat question until the last moment. In high season, availability may be limited. Children, naturally, do not read agreements or care about logistics, but somehow adults are still the ones who must deal with the consequences.
Young driver and age restrictions
The driver’s age may affect the rental conditions and the final price. Young drivers may be subject to an additional fee, and some vehicle categories may have stricter requirements.
Before booking, check:
- minimum driver age;
- driving experience requirements;
- whether a young driver fee applies;
- whether the selected vehicle categories are available;
- whether restrictions apply to older drivers;
- which documents are needed at pick-up;
- whether the driver can be the main driver under the agreement;
- which card is required for the deposit.
Conditions may differ depending on vehicle category and rental package. This is why it is better not to choose a car only by the picture. The picture does not ask for age, does not check the card and does not warn that a specific category may be unavailable. Pictures behave suspiciously irresponsibly.
Automatic or manual: does it affect the price?
The transmission type may affect the rental price. Automatic cars are often more expensive, especially in high season and in popular tourist destinations such as Malaga Airport, Marbella and Alicante.
An automatic car may be more convenient if you:
- are not used to manual transmission;
- plan to drive a lot in the city;
- will park in underground car parks;
- will drive on mountain roads;
- are travelling with family;
- want less stress after a flight;
- are planning long routes;
- do not want to remember the clutch as a personal enemy.
A manual car may be cheaper and more available, but only if the driver is genuinely confident using it. The saving loses its meaning if the first slope in an underground car park turns into a small theatre of panic.
Return to another office
If you want to collect the vehicle in one office and return it to another, this may affect the final price. This format is called one-way rental and must be agreed in advance.
Return to another office may be convenient for routes such as:
- Malaga - Marbella;
- Malaga Airport - Marbella;
- Malaga - Alicante;
- Alicante - Malaga;
- Costa del Sol - Costa Blanca;
- between different cities in Spain.
However, one-way return depends on vehicle availability, office, date, vehicle category and logistics. It may include an additional fee. You cannot simply leave the car in another city without confirmation. The car is not a pigeon, it will not find its own address.
Late return and rental extension
If the customer returns the vehicle later than the agreed time, this may lead to additional costs. Rental extension must be agreed in advance and paid before the current agreement expires.
It is important to remember:
- the vehicle must be returned on the agreed date and time;
- late return may lead to extra charges;
- an extension is not confirmed without the company’s approval;
- an extension usually requires payment before the current rental ends;
- vehicle availability for extra days is not guaranteed;
- the extension price may differ from the original price;
- the agreement must be updated or confirmed.
If plans change, it is better to contact the rental company in advance. A message saying “we will stay longer, but later” rarely looks like an extension. It usually looks like the beginning of unpleasant accounting.
Fines, toll roads and administrative fees
Fines, traffic violations, incorrect parking, towing, toll roads and administrative fees are usually not included in the rental price. If a violation happens during the rental period, the customer is usually responsible.
Extra costs may appear because of:
- speeding fines;
- incorrect parking;
- vehicle towing;
- use of toll roads;
- traffic rule violations;
- driving into restricted zones;
- administrative processing of fines;
- need to identify the driver;
- delays related to official notices.
The rental company may receive a fine notice after the vehicle has already been returned. In this case, the customer may receive information for payment or be charged an administrative fee for processing. A fine does not disappear just because the holiday is over. Fines, unfortunately, have excellent memory.
Cleaning, heavy dirt and damage
Normal use of the vehicle is included in the rental. However, heavy dirt, damage, smells, damaged interior, missing parts or body damage may lead to additional charges.
Extra charges may appear if:
- the vehicle is returned very dirty;
- there are stains, sand, pet hair or smells inside;
- seats or interior elements are damaged;
- there are new scratches, dents or damage;
- rims, tyres, mirrors or glass are damaged;
- the key or vehicle documents are lost;
- the vehicle was used negligently;
- rental conditions were breached.
Before leaving, it is worth checking the vehicle, taking photos and reporting visible damage. At return, it is also useful to keep calm, photos and any remaining faith in reason. The last one, admittedly, is not always available in high season.
Why is car rental more expensive in summer?
In summer, car rental in Spain is usually more expensive because of high demand. In July, August, holiday periods and during major events, prices may rise and vehicle availability may decrease.
Summer prices are affected by:
- high tourist demand;
- limited number of vehicles;
- popularity of airports;
- high demand for automatic cars;
- family trips and holidays;
- long bookings;
- early and late flights;
- busy rental offices;
- popularity of the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca.
That is why it is better to book a car in Malaga, Malaga Airport, Marbella or Alicante in advance during summer. Waiting until the last minute is possible, naturally. Humans have spent centuries testing whether hope can defeat demand. Usually, demand wins.
How to compare prices correctly?
Car rental prices should not be compared only by the “per day” number. It is important to check what exactly is included, what deposit applies, which card is required, which coverage package is selected, what mileage is included, which fuel policy applies and which extra charges are possible.
When comparing prices, check:
- total rental cost for the whole period;
- deposit conditions;
- card requirements;
- type of coverage;
- amount of customer liability;
- included mileage;
- fuel policy;
- cost of extra services;
- return conditions;
- pick-up and return office;
- possible one-way fees;
- late return conditions;
- territory restrictions;
- document requirements.
The cheapest price on the screen does not always mean the best rental. Sometimes a low basic price is balanced by a large deposit, strict conditions, limited mileage or expensive extras. Somehow, the small print has once again turned out to be more important than the beautiful “Book now” button.
What should you check before booking?
Before booking a rental car in Spain, it is better to clarify all conditions that may affect the final price. This is especially important if you are renting a car for the first time, travelling with family, planning a long route or wanting to return the car to another office.
Before booking, ask:
- what the total rental price is;
- whether the selected coverage package is included;
- what deposit is required;
- which card is suitable for the deposit;
- whether a debit card can be used;
- what mileage is included;
- which fuel policy applies;
- how much an additional driver costs;
- how much a child seat costs;
- whether a young driver fee applies;
- whether the car can be returned to another office;
- what the rental extension conditions are;
- which territories are allowed;
- what the insurance does not cover;
- what happens in case of late return.
The clearer the conditions are before payment, the fewer unpleasant surprises there will be at vehicle pick-up. This does not kill spontaneity. It simply protects the wallet from plot twists.
Car rental in Malaga, Marbella and Alicante
SOLO rent a car offers car rental in Malaga, Malaga Airport, Marbella and Alicante. The rental price depends on dates, vehicle category, rental duration, selected package, deposit conditions, mileage, extra services and return location.
If you are planning a short trip along the Costa del Sol, a family holiday in Marbella, a route from Malaga Airport, car rental in Alicante or a trip around the Costa Blanca, it is better to check not only the basic price, but all agreement conditions.
We try to explain rental conditions as clearly as possible: which card is needed, how the deposit works, what is included in the coverage, what mileage applies, how to return the vehicle and which extra costs may appear. Because good car rental is not only a nice vehicle in the car park, but also the absence of the feeling that the agreement suddenly attacked from the bushes.

In short
The car rental price in Spain usually includes use of the vehicle for the agreed period and under the conditions of the selected booking. However, deposit, extended insurance, additional drivers, child seats, one-way return, excess mileage, fuel, fines, damage and late return may be charged separately.
Before booking, it is important to check the final price, deposit conditions, card requirements, coverage package, mileage, fuel policy, return location, extra services and possible fees. This is especially important in high season, when prices change faster than the human mood after the words “extra charge”.
The safest way to avoid surprises is to read the conditions before booking and clarify everything that may affect the price. Boring? Yes. But then car rental remains a trip, not financial archaeology in search of “where did this amount come from?”.
