ZBE Alicante: Do You Need to Worry When Driving a Rental Car?
Low Emission Zones, known in Spain as Zona de Bajas Emisiones or ZBE, are appearing in more and more Spanish cities and sometimes create more questions for travellers than the car rental itself.
Can you drive into central Alicante? Do you need an environmental sticker? Could you receive a fine simply for following the route suggested by Google Maps?
In Alicante, the situation is simpler than in many other large Spanish cities.
There is, however, one important exception: the historic centre, or Casco Antiguo, where separate access restrictions apply.
What Is the Alicante ZBE?
The Alicante ZBE is the city’s Low Emission Zone, created to manage traffic and improve air quality.
However, the existence of a ZBE does not mean that the entire centre of Alicante is closed to normal vehicles.
According to current information from Alicante City Council, the ZBE itself does not automatically introduce a general driving ban for all vehicles solely based on their environmental category.
The area where visitors really need to pay attention is the Casco Antiguo.
Can You Drive a Rental Car into Alicante?
Yes.
You can drive a normal rental car around Alicante and use the city’s main roads.
The fact that the vehicle is rented does not create any special restriction by itself.
You simply need to follow the usual road signs, parking rules and access restrictions on specific streets.
Do You Need a DGT Environmental Sticker?
Modern vehicles have a DGT environmental classification according to their technical characteristics.
For a normal tourist trip, you do not need to buy or attach a new environmental sticker to a rental car yourself.
However, the environmental category of a vehicle and permission to enter a particular street are not the same thing.
Even a vehicle classified as C, ECO or CERO does not automatically have permission to enter a street that is closed to normal traffic.
What Is Different About Alicante’s Casco Antiguo?
The historic centre has a restricted-access system.
Not every vehicle can enter freely.
Some access permissions are linked to:
- residents;
- property owners;
- garages inside the restricted area;
- service vehicles;
- specific authorised vehicle categories;
- pre-approved access.
For this reason, visitors should not simply follow the navigation system into the Casco Antiguo if the route passes signs indicating restricted access.
What If Your Hotel Is in the Historic Centre?
Contact the hotel in advance.
If the accommodation is inside a restricted traffic zone, it may have specific instructions for guests, parking arrangements or a system for authorised access.
Ask beforehand:
- whether you can drive directly to the hotel;
- whether you need to provide the vehicle registration number;
- which street or route is authorised;
- where the parking is located;
- how to leave the area correctly afterwards.
It is not a good idea to choose a “similar” street yourself. In Spanish historic centres, saving ten minutes can sometimes turn into a surprisingly expensive souvenir.
Can You Request One-Time Access to the Casco Antiguo?
In certain situations, Alicante City Council provides a procedure for reporting or requesting one-time vehicle access to a restricted area.
There is a specific municipal process for this.
For tourists, however, it is usually easier to ask the hotel, apartment owner or parking operator first, because they know the access conditions for the exact address.
Is Access Controlled by Cameras?
Yes. The restricted-access system includes vehicle monitoring.
So the strategy of “I’ll just drive in quickly, nobody will notice” is best left to bad comedies.
If a road sign prohibits entry, follow the sign even if your navigation app insists that this is the fastest route.
Can You Drive Directly to Plaza del Ayuntamiento?
Drivers of ordinary cars should not expect to drive directly through Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
Since January 2026, the square has been pedestrianised for normal traffic, with access reserved for authorised vehicles such as public transport and taxis.
If you are visiting this part of Alicante, it is easier to choose a nearby car park and continue on foot.
Where Is the Best Place to Park for Central Alicante?
For a normal sightseeing visit, using a public car park near the centre is much easier than trying to drive as close as possible to every attraction.
From a central parking facility, you can easily walk to:
- Explanada de España;
- Plaza del Ayuntamiento;
- Casco Antiguo;
- Barrio de Santa Cruz;
- Playa del Postiguet;
- the port.
You can read more in our dedicated guide “Parking in Alicante with a Rental Car”.
Should You Drive Through Barrio de Santa Cruz?
For sightseeing, no.
Santa Cruz is much better explored on foot.
The streets are narrow, historic and definitely not designed for someone in a rented SUV to test the width of the vehicle using nearby walls as measuring equipment.
Leave the car in a parking facility and continue on foot.
What If the GPS Sends You into a Restricted Area?
Always follow the actual road signs.
If Google Maps, Apple Maps or another navigation app suggests entering under a restricted-access sign, stay on a legal road and allow the app to recalculate.
The navigation system can help you find the route, but the driver remains responsible for obeying traffic signs.
Are There Fines for Entering a Restricted Area?
Violating active access restrictions can result in a fine.
If a traffic offence is recorded during a rental, the driver is responsible according to the rental agreement and Spanish traffic regulations.
It is generally much easier to check the route beforehand than to discover later that your holiday has unexpectedly developed an administrative subplot.
Do You Need to Avoid the Entire Centre of Alicante?
No.
This is one of the most important things to understand.
The Alicante ZBE does not mean that visitors with rental cars must drive around the entire city centre in a huge circle.
The main roads remain accessible to normal traffic.
Extra attention is required only on streets with specific access restrictions, especially in the historic part of the city.
What Should Visitors Remember?
The rules are fairly simple:
- you can drive a rental car in Alicante;
- you do not need to buy a new environmental sticker yourself for a normal rental;
- do not confuse a vehicle’s environmental category with permission to enter a restricted street;
- the Casco Antiguo has separate access restrictions;
- follow road signs, not only GPS;
- if your hotel is inside a restricted zone, ask for access instructions in advance;
- for sightseeing in the historic centre, it is usually easier to park and continue on foot.
Alicante ZBE and Renting a Car with SOLO rent a car
If you rent a car at Alicante Airport, the existence of the ZBE does not prevent normal journeys around Alicante or the Costa Blanca.
You can drive around the city, visit the beaches, use the N-332, A-70 and AP-7, and travel to other destinations in the region.
The important thing is to respect local restrictions on specific streets.
If you plan to spend the day in Alicante’s historic centre, it is normally easier to leave the car in a public parking facility and continue on foot.
This allows you to avoid narrow streets, restricted-access areas and the mystery of why your navigation app suddenly decided that introducing you to an alley clearly never designed for a normal car was essential to your holiday.

In Short
The Alicante ZBE does not mean a general ban on rental cars entering the city centre.
The main exception is the Casco Antiguo, where a separate restricted-access system applies.
If your hotel is inside the historic centre, ask in advance about the authorised route and whether the vehicle registration number needs to be registered.
For a normal tourist rental, you do not need to arrange a new environmental sticker for the car yourself.
Always follow road signs even if your navigation app suggests another route. For visiting the Old Town, it is usually easier to park the car and continue on foot.
